Why would anybody have a fear of success?

Good question.

People think of success in different ways. Some people see it as something they want to attain, and others think it is something they will never attain.

Is that the difference between the glass have full or glass half empty people?

Let’s take a look at why people might have a fear of success.

Fear of Success Means Change

We go through life thinking that we go to school, get a good job, get paid, maybe get a raise or a promotion every now and then, and then retire. That’s what life has in store for us.

Or, that’s what we’ve been conditioned to believe.

Many people are okay with that.

But what if you’re not?

You have dreams and aspirations to do something bigger, better.

You know you were meant to be someone different.

You want to control your own destiny.

Well, good for you!

But, that will mean change, and lots of it.

That’s where the fear of success starts to set it.

Usually, it’s subconscious.

I’m not good enough. I don’t know how. Thoughts like that.

Change them.

Uproot your negative concerns or tasks, one by one. Don’t be overwhelmed by the whole lot.

Learn to celebrate each little win along the way.

Change how you think, who you hang out with, what you read.

Stop watching the news. Stop doing the same things over and over. Stop beating yourself up.

You can do whatever you set out to do.

But, it will require constant change, and you’ll learn to thrive on it.

Meet Your Fear of Success Head On

You’ve probably done this at work, or maybe for a fitness program, or some other aspect of your life, but the first thing you need to do is set goals. And, set them in a way that will give you the right mindset to succeed.

For example:

Bad Goal: I need to quit smoking
Good Goal: I want to be a non-smoker

Result – Instead of thinking about why you need to quit, visualize yourself not smoking, and feeling and looking better.

Bad Goal: I have to lose weight
Good Goal: I will develop good and healthy eating habits

Result – By working at changing the bad habits that made you overweight, you’ll reward yourself by fitting into smaller clothes, and feeling good about yourself.

Bad Goal: I want to make some money
Good Goal: I will become successful by building my own online business

Results – Just wanting to make money is not a goal, it is an end result. Committing yourself to building a business will make you a stronger person overall, and you’ll definitely make money along the way.

Start with a long term goal, and then break it down into short and medium term goals. You know, what you will accomplish in six months, this month, and this week.

Think positive.

Say Goodbye to Your Fear of Success

People tend to want to do something, and then talk themselves out of it, because they think they can’t do it, or they think it’s too hard. Anything worth having, is worth working for, or fighting for.

Don’t let that little voice in your head, or the little devil on your shoulder convince you that you can’t do something. Flick them off your shoulder, and take charge of killing your fear of success.

Or if you’re a guy, be that guy that everyone wants to be around – the one that listens and makes you feel important.

Social media is like a big cocktail party. You don’t like to be sold to at a party, right? You wouldn’t show up at a party and start signing up people to your newsletter, would you?

I love social and email marketing for that sheer opportunity to build relationships, long lasting relationships. It’s fun, rewarding, and heck, it can even be lucrative.

- Part 2

Yesterday, I wrote about the Chris Brogan speech I heard at the Social Media Camp in Victoria. There was so much information crammed into an hour, I had to make two posts about it.

This one focuses on Chris’s latest passion, email marketing.

I’ve learned a lot about this lately, so Chris is certainly not having an epiphany, but what he does do well, is put things into simple, common sense terms.

Essentially, we have been led to believe that social networks are the best way to share information and reach our customers.

Think again.

Email is still much more targeted.

Chris Brogan Explains Power of The Inbox

When you forward email from your inbox, you forward it to people that matter to you, to people that you think will benefit from the information. In Facebook, or Google+, who sees your post is totally random.

  • Email should come from a real address, not a ‘do not reply’ address.
  • Do not have a link to “click here to view in browser”
  • Always use an email service, don’t rely on Gmail or something similar
    (try Aweber, Constant Contact, MailChimp, or similar)
    includes metrics, list management, and they typically have good relationships with the spam police

Chris Brogan & Writing That Email

When you create an email, write it like you are writing to “one person”. Reach out and connect. Act like a person, and not a company.

Echo – people need to hear a bit about their own story and they’ll relate.
Brevity – don’t ramble, and put the most important part at the top.
Trust – make yourself available

People’s time is precious, so make your email stand out, and make it count.

Snappy Subject Lines and Branding

Someone may not open your emails all the time, especially if they subscribe to your newsletter, or other regularly scheduled blasts. It just slides down the inbox as they scroll.

But, they will continue to see your name, and your subject line as they browse through their inbox.

This repetition keeps your brand in your audience’s presence.
Just don’t spam people. Be respectful.

Simplify Your Signature

I’m sure you are familiar with those email signatures, that have about 20 lines of text and links and numbers, and you don’t even know what to look at. People are typically trying to make it easier for you to get a hold of them, sort of a customer service mentality.

But this is what really happens.

When you create the massive signature, you totally take away from your message. It’s like having an anchor that drags your message into oblivion. People get lost, forget what they read, and move on.

It’s a well known fact that if you give people two choices, they can’t make a decision.

When you end your email, have only one call to action, or even just ask a question. Just one thing. Keep it simple and inviting.

If they want to find you on all your social networks, they will find you, or click on your social icons on your website.

Chris Brogan Speech Review – Part One

This past weekend, I attended the 2-day Social Media Camp in Victoria, BC, and was very excited to hear Chris Brogan as the keynote speaker. I’d been warned by others that had heard him speak that he may not deliver what you expect.

So, I just had no expectations. But, I was pleasantly relieved to hear a very personal and relevant speech for the audience at hand. The room was full of social media types from all types of business. He certainly touched on a few cords that would have been relevant to each person in the audience.

Why Listen to Chris Brogan

Chris Brogan is a New York Times bestselling author, a professional speaker, a strategic advisor to mid and large sized companies, plus a blogger and creative producer. His popular blog, chrisbrogan.com, is in the Top 5 of the Advertising Age Power150.

He is a key influencer in how people do business online using social media and good old sales and customer service strategies.

Chris Brogan Promotes Google+

Some of the meat of Chris’s speech was about Google+ and how it stands out as a social network and why it is in it’s early stages of growth.

Google Plus is not a network like Facebook, which is mostly your old friends and family, it’s a place where people connect through common interests. It really becomes your network, and not just a place where you are a member.

Following is not the goal, interaction is. We should be connecting.

You can see that Facebook is just set up for advertising. Google+, however, is part of the huge network of other Google products. Depending on who might be in your Google+ Circles, and therefore your circle of influence, your content rankings in Google’s search engine will be affected – in a good way.

Chris Brogan and ‘Impact Equation’

Coming out in October is Brogan’s new book, authored with Julien Smith. It’s called ‘Impact Equation’. He partially described an acronym for the word Create, that is spelled out further in the book.

C is for Contrast – With so much noise online, you need to be seen as a contrast, whether it’s humour, or sweetness, or being profound. Maybe you’re just completely whacky.

R is for Reach – You have the opportunity to get your message to a lot of people. Facebook and Linkedin are closed – invite only. Google Plus can take you further.

E is for Echo – People need to hear an idea that they feel they can make their own. Try to get people to say they’ve had the same idea before.

A is for Articulation – Be brief. The short form is alive and well. There is too much fluff in the world. Provide world changing thought leadership, but tell it to me like I’m a six year old.

T is for Trust – communications with prospects and customers today, is about growing and nurturing, it’s not about making money.

E is for ??? – Chris stumbled on the last E, saying he forgot. Or was it a ploy to get us to buy the book ;) ? I’m pretty sure he doesn’t work that way.

Chris Brogan Is An Influencer

If you didn’t know who Chris Brogan was, I think you would have found his speech somewhat scattered. But with a room full of social media geeks, I believe we all found great value in nitty gritty details and lofty cerebral musings – whether you agreed with them or not.

The man has his pulse connected to the online world and how we work and live in it. Chris Brogan is also now providing a lot of focus for small and home business entrepreneurs, and not just the big and mighty corporations that he is trying to make more human.

With intelligent humour and influential wisdom to pay attention to, I deem this Brogan presentation a success.

You can place ads, write articles or blogs, set up social media posts, talk to your customers, whatever it is, it is paramount that you do something daily.

Mastermind With Other Leaders
Surround yourself with like-minded people that are also leaders, positive thinkers, and success driven. Improve your entrepreneur skills by modelling them.

Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, first defined the mastermind as a “coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.”

Look to mentors, people you admire, people who have helped you, people you’d like to be like. Get on conference calls, webinars, and listen to successful people. Join in on conversations on blog comments, or on forums. Find an individual or group that you can chat with, and can make you accountable for your actions.

Develop You
Personal Development should be an ongoing habit. Learn about business. Learn about yourself. Learn about anything. Always be a student.

Every day, you need to take some time to either read books, listen to audio recordings, or attend live events. When people see how you approach your own self improvement, they will want to be a leader just like you.

Cultivate the Expectation of Leadership
Believe you are the leader. Be the leader. Do what leaders do. There is no school, or graduation to achieving leadership. It’s an attitude and a way of life, personally and in business. Show up as the leader and people will recognize you as one.

Being an entrepreneur is a way of life. It’s not a job. You will find more fulfillment in learning and growing your entrepreneur skills, every day, for years to come.
